image-hosting-service improvement

Postby dmoore247 on Mon Feb 04, 2008 10:02 pm

I thought your page on "amazon-s3--how-to-use-Amazon-s3-as-an-image-hosting-service" was excellent.

I was somewhat familiar with the AWS services before this, but your help page on this one use case prompted me to sign up.

My image load is about 10x faster due to AWS vs cheap hosting.

Now, to complete the optimization.
It would be good to help and enable the user to set a far future "Expires" header on all of the files in the bucket to optimize browser performance further, and reduce AWS bandwidth charges.

I read somewhere that the default Expires header is set to the future + 15 minutes.

Hmmm. I found something interesting on the left file tree panel. If I select right mouse, there is an option to set Upload properties. Sounds about what I want...

I opened that, clicked 'Add' and entered a key: Expires and a Date value Wed Jan 01 01:00:00 EST 2020.
Click OK and the file is uploaded.
After hitting refresh for a minute or two on the browser, the new file then shows up with the new header, 'Expires'. FireFox, Firebug, and YSlow recognize the header and all is optimized!!!
