Automatic folder sync and custom HTTP headers

Postby RichardDavies on Sat Dec 01, 2007 11:11 pm

I've been using Bucket Explorer for a little bit now and have found it to be the best S3 UI that I've tried so far. Great job!

Here are a couple of suggestions that I'd really like to see in this program:

1. The ability to automatically sync a folder on your computer with a S3 folder.
2. The ability to set custom H.T.T.P. headers that are returned when files are served over the web.

Thanks Richard,

We do plan to add folder sync as soon as possible (should be weeks).

There are two options for custom headers.
1. If you download today's release, you can associate a mime type / content - type to a specific extention and all files uploaded with that extention will use the specified MIME type. To associate a mime type to an extention, click on Tools- Advanced-Edit Mime Type.

2. You can right click on a file and choose to Upload with Custom Headers. When uploading with custom headers, you can specify mime type and any other custom headers that you may want.

Let us know if you were looking for something else with the custom header option.

Thanks

Thank you for the reply. I was not aware that you can right click on files to upload with custom headers. However, this means that you can only set custom headers when uploading a file. What about for files that are already uploaded? Ideally, I would like to be able upload a bunch of files (without specifying custom headers) and then select all of the uploaded files in my bucket and apply a custom header to all of the files at once.

It would seem logical to me that this functionality should be very similar to setting the access control list on objects in the bucket. So there should be a 'custom header' button on the toolbar and a 'custom header' menu option when right clicking on a file in the bucket.

Is there any reason why setting custom headers can only be performed when uploading the file(s)?

based on our understanding onf the S3 API, adding custom headers is only supported while uploading a file to S3, i.e. they cannot be changed.

Yes, after reviewing the S3 API, I believe you are correct that custom headers can only be set when uploading a file. I guess I need to suggest to Amazon . com that they modify their API to allow custom headers to be set or changed for files that have already been uploaded.

In light of this, it would be nice if Bucket Explorer had some way of setting default custom headers that would be applied to all uploaded files. I have hundreds of files that I would like to set custom headers on, and the headers will always be the same. I'd like to be able to specify those headers once and then have it remember to apply them to every upload.

I too would find it handy to have a default header setting for all files uploaded. Instead of having to specify per file.

Just wanted to bump this because I have yet to discover the sync feature you claimed to have in the works "within weeks" back in December. Is this feature disabled in the eval version? There's little to no documentation for this app.

1. The metadata update feature mentioned in this thread was added in June 30th release, i.e. now we update http headers without downloading and re-uploading a file.
2. We did not implement an automated sync, which can "delete" the target files if & when source files are deleted. We did however release a queue based upload and a command line tool in June release. Both of these options can be used for sync, as long as you are okay in not synching the deletes.

I agree that we need to work on more documentation. Thanks for your input.
