USB "portable" version

Postby celtickuja » Fri Oct 12, 2007 10:30 pm

This would be a 100% winning app for me if you folks could provide a version that installs easily on a USB flash drive. I know that the Java dependencies can't be avoided, but so long as I'm on a machine that has Java installed, I'd love to be able to take my installation of Bucket Explorer around from machine to machine (at work, at home, at a friends house, etc) without having to reinstall each time. As a point of reference, I already use a number of apps from portableapps dot com. They have a great install system established and a general set of guidelines that portable apps should follow.

We will look at portalableapps to find the standards, but for now, the current downloadable version IS 100% supported on a USB drive. You DO NOT need Java installed on the machine. We use embedded JRE, which makes the size 70 meg after extraction, but the app runs without any dependencies.

So, just download the self extractor and extract everything to USB drive OR copy the folder where you installed Bucket Explorer to the USB drive, and everything should work. You will just need to double click on exe to run it, instead of start menu shortcut.

Thanks

USB Portability

WOW... I am impressed.
I was able to cut the 'Program Files\Bucket Explorer' directory off of an XP machine, paste it to a USB drive, carry it to a Win2K machine and connect to S3 without problems.

Does the license permit this sort of usage?
If so, I have my checkbook in hand and am ready to buy.

And if I had remembered to log in, the above wouldn't have been by 'Guest'.

yes, the license permits this sort of usage. The license is "per user". You may use it on x number of machines (a reasonable number of machines that one user has). Once we release the paid version, you will have to "activate" it on every machine where you try to use it, but we are working on to make that activation process as easy as possible (paste email id, activation key and click activate). Again, we will allow those activations on a reasonable number of machine for each user. If we get reports that a key is leaked on the net, we can restrict that key from future activation.

I was able to delete the jre folder under the Bucket Explorer install folder and it still worked (probably because my laptop already has a JRE on it). I tried this on a USB drive and it worked as well, though I guess keeping the extra 80mb of the jre folder on the thumb drive would be a safety net just in case the machine you're running BE on doesn't have a JRE.

yes, it should work even if you delete the JRE as long as java 5 or java 6 are installed and are in path. We ship it just to make it easy for users who don't have java installed on the system.
