Suggest a new feature and help us improve Bucket Explorer for Amazon S3

suggestions from another new user

Postby radiator on Wed Oct 10, 2007 8:26 pm

I have just started using bucket explorer, and so it's possible that I don't understand all of the available function, or perhaps these suggestions have already been incorporated into the new beta release that is coming soon, but here are a couple of things that I would find useful:

1) I understand that the number of buckets that I can create in my S3 account is limited (I forget the number - maybe it was 50 or 100). But I'm not sure that the current release shows me a count of buckets that I have created. It would be useful to see such a count. I plan to create a lot of buckets, and it would be helpful to keep track of the number that I have created.

2) It would be useful to put tags or other metadata on individual objects or groups of objects, and permit filtering of the view, or sort, or multiple selection by tag. (There are probably lots of other things that you would want to do in the UI based on metadata, but those are the things that would be most immediately useful to me). Maybe you are already planning to show metadata on the "properties" popup (although some metadata might be binary and/or too long to display in a popup window).

3) Have you considered adding features to the local path display tree (such as pop-up file size information, or ability to sort the files within a directory list)?

4) How about copy of a bucket object directly to a copy in the same bucket or a different bucket? I don't know whether the S3 API permits that natively or not, but if not, it might be possible to do it "under the covers" via a hidden download and upload. That is probably the way that FTP GUIs (such as Globalscape CuteFTP) mimic the operation of windows native functions, yet operate transparently as if they were happening on the server - but then I don't know all of the native capabilities of FTP either, so maybe that's not how it's done.

I would also be interested in your offer of the free release-level version when it becomes available, thanks...

Thanks for the suggestions radiator,

You have some very good points here. We have freezed new features for Oct version, and some of these features will show up in Oct relase. We can add rest of them around Nov end / early December time frame.

I will add your email id for the free copy of first release for providing valuable inputs. Also, will update this thread again when we release the Oct version to inform you which features are part of that release.

Thanks
Saurabh
