Concurrent BE Sessions

Postby wakewatcher » Sun Oct 07, 2007 4:08 am

How do I use BE concurrently in separate sessions? I'm uploading gigs of video data and want to at the same time upload/delete/etc smaller html file (and debug them etc.)

The downloadable version is a self extractor ZIP, i.e. not an installer. So, you can extract the files again in a different folder and run it from there. If you do that, it will change the pointer in Start -> Programs -> Bucket Explorer shortcut to the new location, but it will keep working from the old location by just double clicking the exe.

Another way is to copy current bucketexplorer folder in a new bucketexplorer2 folder. Once you copy everything, then the exe should run from the new location.

In theory you should be able to run two instances of the exe from same folder, but we have not tested that how would logging be affected in that case where two exe's are trying to write to the same log file.

Thanks. I found another way. I've added the "S3 Organizer" extention to FireFox so run BE and FireFox at the same time. You might look at S3O it pulls up the files instantaneously (BE takes it sweet time drawing them out)and it has standard folder features such as order by name, size or modified (still doesn't have type which I would use a lot) AND doesn't ask me to confirm every action I request, (I.e I KNOW I'm trying to edit the ACL as I've already right clicked once to start the action and then clicked the box I want to change. Its very unlikely I'm going to change my mind at that point so don't ask please.)and when I want to get the object's URL it's no fuss no muss just one click and I got it. S30 does have some bugs as when you try to carry out an action on a bunch of stuff at once sometimes FF crashes.

When you say that bucket explorer takes its sweet time, are you refering to local file system's tree or bucket listing? If it is Bucket Listing, are you trying Sept Beta or August GA release?
Sept Beta should be much faster comapred to August GA to list contents in a bucket. Remember, we are also showing the ACL and size of the folders, which requires us to get more information from Amazon. Also try listing a bucket with several thousand files and see which one works better.

I'm using release 2007.09.28.

For example I have a bucket that has 138 objects in the main bucket a total of 280 including subfolders (sub-buckets or whatever) and it takes 25+ seconds to render. (And since it always takes me back to the root bucket every time I do something in a sub-bucket it really is time consuming.

For what its worth. I'm assuming the ACL won't change unless I've changed it so I don't need to see it every time if it speeds things up not to have it. Also I will be dealing in hundreds of objects per bucket not thousands and assume anyone dealing in thousands would not use a visual tool but some command line tool.

Hello WakeWatcher:

Would you be willing to try one more beta release? (I do understand its a pain to try multiple (beta) releases. You can extract it into a different folder without affecting the prod release).

We still have some loose ends to fix before we call it a GA release, but I wanted your feedback specially for two things that you had asked:
1. Click on Tools - Preferencs - and de-select the "Show ACL" option and then comapre the speed with Firefox extention.
2. Right click on an object or multiple objects and click on "generate web URL" and see all the options we are providing for generating the URLs. Do you really think we can fit all of those to directly copy to clipboard? We still need to fix the UI of that Generate URL screen to make it more easy to understand, and need to fix the "virtual host" option, but that will provide you details of all the available options.

Thanks for your time. We are still working on the sorting of local files, and we are still 50-50 on if it will make it to Oct release or not.

Thanks. This is much faster. The visible page is quite fast (seems to draw in quick blocks) but anything below the first page still takes time to render. (Albeit faster than before.) It is not objectionable but I can get in front of it (meaning drag down the scroll bar and need to wait for the objects to show up.) On the other hand the FF S30 somehow renders the whole thing nearly instantaneous.

On the other item I see how all of these options are useful but for me at least 99% of the time I just want the standard http url so I'd much rather do a single click to copy the highlighted object and get its http url. (for the times I need something fancier then I'd be happy to do multiple clicks.)

Also it would be nice if the objects were arranged in standard order with folders all together and special characters before alphabetic characters in a normal sort.

Thanks for checking it out. We will check the speed for page 2.

I will be moving this thread to "deferred requests" forum, because we still want to add keyboard shortcut or a quick button to copy URLs to clipboard. Moving it to deferred forum just mean that its not going to be in October release. Most of the items from that forum will be done in Nov / Dec time frame.

We will also check the sorting of objects in next release. I think for now we are just showing them in the sequence in which we get the data from Amazon, and then you can sort the columns.
